We Met Ann
Sunday dawned bright and clear here in Southeastern Colorado. At 7:00 a.m., Patsy and I left for Jon and Tanya’s place at Penrose, Colorado, to meet Ann, her husband, and friends. Ann is a donkey lover and runs a donkey rescue mission in New Hampshire. Her husband, Jeff, goes along for the ride. The drive [...]
BB Roosters update
BB stands for Barn Builders (Don and Danielle built a barn) I assume the BB roosters did their job and all of Hasty is awake. Recently, the Barn Builders were charging along the road to the dam, talking about the unique settlement of Hasty. They wanted to do something that would help set Hasty apart [...]
A book project resurrected
I have spent many hours in university libraries researching pages of old Southern newspapers, looking for important issues of the day. Those old pages were full of words and deeds of many seemingly important people who are no longer important. In addition, I have 256 hours of taped interviews with sharecroppers and sons and daughters [...]
My wife told me
This morning my wife said, “No man has been shot while doing dishes.” I acted like I didn’t hear her and I exited the kitchen.

Georgia Mule
Last week I was in the muggy state of Georgia. Outside the city limits of Chickamauga, Georgia I saw one of the best looking saddle mules I have seen in 35 years. My suitcase was packed with the usual stuff unimportant stuff needed for a visit, like clean underwear, etc. No room in the suitcase [...]
Brutus, Mom’s red rooster
When I was a young boy, Brutus, Mom’s Big Rhode Island Red rooster told me he had bought the farm from the bank. He strutted, crowed and ruled the barnyard. He was a sharp dresser. On Tuesdays he wore a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, and a black bow tie. Sometimes he dressed like Clark Gable [...]
